Flora was a home girl, said to be the steadying influence of the family. She met responsibility in caring, unceasingly, for her aged mother until she passed away.
Flora's interests include gardening and books.
On leaving school May and Flora helped with daily chores and milking. Soon it was wartime and women had to take on more and more farm work. Together they became partners in dairying when their father transferred eighty acres of "Musk Vale" to them, where they worked a dairy farm.
Their parents living with them, they made a new home which was accessible from Tandberg's Lane. Later they purchased and moved to a property on Fry's Lane, Poowong and engaged a share-farmer to carry on at Tandberg's Lane.
They continued to milk cows on their new farm and to fill in spare time "the girls" taught themselves the art of cake making and decorating, improvising and improving their methods until a high degree of excellence was reached.
They gained second place at two Royal Melbourne Shows for Best Decorated Cake and soon became well known for their cakes and were able to build a successful business, dealing mainly with birthday, wedding and Christmas cakes.
After ten years May and Flora sold their Fry's Lane property and moved, with their mother, to Drouin, their father having, by this time, passed away.
By this stage the cake business was a full time job and in latter years African Violets have entered their lives and they have both become very knowledgeable in this field.
Both May and Flora have always taken a keen interest in all their nephews and nieces and equally so in their great-nephews and nieces.
