In 27 countries the Society of St Paul uses the mass media to communicate the Good News.

In Australia this religious institute of priests and brothers publishes books and parish bulletins under the imprint ST PAULS PUBLICATIONS. It also operates ST PAULS BOOK CENTRE in Brisbane.

In 1988 the Society of St Paul commissioned a survey of its own image. The results showed that while its various apostolic initiatives have an impact, and are recognisable, the institute itself is not sufficiently known or clearly identified with its activities. A coherent and global image of the Society of St Paul was lacking.

A logo was needed that would express the specific character of the Society of St Paul and protect it to the outside world. An internationally acceptable design was needed that would represent the institute and its apostolic activities, uniting them in a single design.

THE DESIGN

A noted Italian designer, Giorgetto Giuiaro, was commissioned to design the new logo. He as asked to create a symbol that would express the foundational charism of the Society of St Paul to bring the Word of God to be communicated.

It had to be modern - emphasising the Society of St Paul's mission to the people of today - while at the dame time remaining above passing fashions.

MEANING

For some the design symbolises the inner journey and spiritual ascent to God: the way of the pilgrim.

For some the unusual use of straight lines and curved surfaces in one design represents the union or reconciliation of opposites: life/death, man/woman, East/West, firmness of principle/openness, being/becoming, ecumenism.

For many the symbol represents movement and dynamism - from chaos of particles to cosmos - unity in God.

When you see this logo, we hope you will also be reminded of the quality of products at ST PAULS PUBLICATIONS and ST PAULS BOOK CENTRE, and of the members of the religious institute behind these products: the priests and brothers of the Society of St Paul.
